For those looking to participate in events we've a list of our favourite 5 ultramarathons. We hope this information inspires you to lace up your running shoes and explore the beautiful trails of the Lake District.


 

1.       Experience the thrill of the Lap, an unforgettable journey across beautiful landscapes! This unique event offers two distinct routes: clockwise in May and anticlockwise in September, each covering 75 km of stunning scenery. The well-marked paths make it easy to navigate, making it an ideal choice for first-time ultrarunners as well as seasoned participants. With exceptional organization and support throughout the course, you'll have everything you need to focus on tackling those miles and soaking in the beauty around you. One on the list for its challenge and adventure like route! Registration for the September 2026 will be open on the 14th September 2025 at 8pm UK time.

2.       Experience the ultimate test of endurance at the Lakeland 100, hailed as one of the most incredible long-distance trail races in the UK. Unlike traditional routes, this adventure takes you through breath taking valleys and along stunning fells, showcasing hidden gems within Cumbria's majestic landscape. Participants will tackle either 50 or 100 miles of picturesque yet challenging terrain, navigating ever-changing conditions and carrying essential gear. Those who cross the finish line in Coniston won't just achieve a race goal; they'll join an elite group of legends who have conquered one of Britain's most iconic outdoor challenges. Whether you're running or walking, both courses promise a rewarding experience that celebrates perseverance and our beautiful natural environment—dare to take on this unforgettable journey! Ballot for the event opens on the 1st September 2025.

3.       The Lakes Traverse is a thrilling 100km ultra marathon that follows the iconic Wainwright’s coast to coast route through the stunning Lake District fells at the end of March. This event is designed for those with an adventurous spirit, embracing the ethos of self-sufficiency as participants take on this remarkable challenge.

Beginning at the picturesque St. Bees on the west coast, runners will navigate through breath taking landscapes such as Ennerdale and Borrowdale, traverse Grasmere Common, and pass by Grisedale Tarn before moving through Patterdale. The course includes a climb over Kidsty Pike and runs alongside Haweswater, leading to a rewarding finish in Shap.

This ultra marathon not only tests physical endurance but also offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in one of Britain’s most beautiful national parks. It serves as an excellent stepping stone for athletes aspiring to tackle the more demanding Northern Traverse. 4.       The Helvellyn Sky Ultra offers a truly exhilarating challenge for those ready to push their limits. 5.       Get ready for the ultimate challenge with the 13 Valleys Ultra race at the end of September! Spanning approximately 184.3km, this new ish ultra race takes you through the breath taking trails and mountains of the Lake District National Park. Starting and finishing in Keswick, participants will navigate through all 13 valleys, encountering stunning fells and lakes along the way.

Runners will take on a demanding route marked by 13 checkpoints and feed stations. While the course is not waymarked, each participant will receive a detailed reading materials as well as a GPX file to guide their journey. This event is designed for experienced ultra runners who can self-qualify—it's not just about distance; it's about mental fortitude and physical endurance.

Expect significant elevation changes and uneven terrain, with some sections requiring navigation at night amidst potentially unpredictable weather conditions. The 13 Valleys Ultra isn't just another race; it represents one of the most formidable tests in ultra running today.
